"The future of Ukraine very much depends on the strengthening of democracy, which means not just support for political freedoms, but also economic progress", the President of Ukraine declared during the Forum for the Future of Democracy, which came to an end on 23 October in Kyiv. "Ukraine, one of the last European countries to set out along the path of democracy, is in a sensitive phase of its development", according to Mr Yushchenko, who added that membership of the European Union and NATO and the opening up of the economic area were other challenges facing his country.
