Strasbourg, 10/05/2012 – Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland met today with Tawakkul Karman, 33 year-old Yemeni journalist, politician and human rights activist. Ms Karman is one of three joint recipients of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work.


She is the first Yemeni, the first Arab woman, and the youngest person ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Mr Jagland is the Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.


Ms Karman is in Strasbourg at the city's invitation and will be the key-note speaker at the Strasbourg World Forum for Democracy in October.
