Swiss government position on 'Yes' to popular initiative against the construction of minarets

29.11.2009 - The majority of Swiss voters and of the cantons approved the popular initiative "Against the Construction of Minarets". The Swiss government respects this democratic decision. The ban prohibits only the construction of new minarets. Existing minarets are not affected by this vote. Mosques and prayer centres can continue to operate and to be built. Muslims can continue freely and publicly to practise their religion in over 150 mosques and prayer centres in Switzerland. The possible legal consequences of a complaint about the minaret ban to the European Court of Human Rights can be examined only if and when the specific case arises.
