Lisbon forum: Empowering civil society in Europe’s southern neighbourhood
Ismaili Centre, Lisbon

Lisbon 04.11.2013 – As the Arab Spring continues to change climates – sometimes tumultuously – the Council of Europe and its North-South Centre in Lisbon have organised a forum to promote constructive dialogue and democracy in Europe’s southern neighbourhood.

Supported by the European Union, the Lisbon Forum will take place the 6 and 7 November at the Ismaili Centre building. EU special representative Bernardino Léon will inaugurate the forum, and it will be entirely open to the press.

The forum will provide a platform for meetings between government, parliament and local authority representatives and civil society leaders from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and other countries ( see programme).

During the forum, two leading women from civil society in Tunisia – Faïza Zouaoui Skandrani and Saida Ounissi – will debate the question “ Reconciling political Islam and democracy: illusion or reality ?

A panel of international journalists from such prestigious media as the Associated Press, The Guardian, and Le Monde will take part in the debate.
