23 August, Edinburgh (Scotland)
The Council of Europe seizes the opportunity offered by the Festival of Edinburgh to award its label "Cultural Event" to the Music Initiative of the Aga Khan Foundation. The Council of Europe "Cultural Event" label (CECEL) recognises exceptional and innovative cultural and artistic projects, which convey strong messages related to the Council of Europe’s mission and values and address key challenges of the European societies of today. This year, four other projects were awarded the Council of Europe label, Hotel Gelem, Satellistaden, CultureFutures Club and Warriors-Génération-Europe

Public hearing in case Tymoshenko v Ukraine
28 August, Strasbourg – The European Court of Human Rights will hold a public hearing in the case of Tymoshenko v. Ukraine (2.30 pm) concerning complaints related to the detention of the former Ukrainian Prime Minister.

The Arab Spring and young people
28-29 August, Tunis – The symposium entitled “Arab Spring: Youth participation for the promotion of peace, human rights and fundamental freedoms” is co-organised in  partnership between the European Commission and the Council of Europe in the field of youth, the League of Arab States, the Tunisian authorities and the Council of Europe North-South Centre. Strategies and projects to implement so as to support and enhance young people’s partcipation in society will be discussed.

Lives lost in the Mediterranean Sea : Round table on migration
31 August, Venice – In the framework of the Venice Film Festival (29 August-8 September), the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe Maud de Boer-Buquicchio and members of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons will attend the screening of the documentary “Mare Chiuso” which describes the sending back of illegal migrants and refugees to Libya.The screening will be followed by a round table discussion on refugees and asylum on the topic “Lost at sea, the human tragedy of Mediterranean exodus in the presence of members of the Italian Government and of two survivors of a tragic shipwreck.
